Visitors

At Broadway, we want to be a church shaped by our mission: Ever seeking, serving and growing as the family of God with unconditional love and acceptance.

What to Expect on your Visit

If you visit a Sunday morning worship service at Broadway, there will be people to greet you when you enter the building. The sanctuary (worship center) is on the main level – up half a flight of stairs from the glass door entrances, or one flight of stairs from the northwest corner white doors.  There is an elevator just inside the east (parking lot) glass entry.

On the main level, there will someone at the information desk if you have any questions.  We try to “mug” all first time visitors — giving a coffee cup filled with information about Broadway and the various programs and activities we offer.

We truly seek to treat everyone who comes with unconditional love and acceptance. However, we know we are human, and may fall short of that goal, and if so, we ask your forgiveness.  You will encounter people at worship who are at different “places” in their life journeys: some folks will feel joyful and outgoing, while someone else might be in grief and be more quiet, and yet another may also be a visitor.

There is no “dress code” at Broadway so you will see people dressed in suits and dresses and you will see people dressed in shorts (in the summer!) and blue jeans–whatever attire they are comfortable to worship in. You are welcome in whatever attire Sunday morning finds you!

As you enter the sanctuary, ushers will greet you and give you a worship bulletin. This contains the order of worship — a guide to the service including the text of prayers that are prayed in unison and page numbers for the songs that the congregation sings together. The hymnals and songbooks are located either on the pews (seats) or in racks on the back of the pew ahead. As a visitor, you are welcome to join in the prayers and singing, if you wish.

Each service lasts about an hour.

On the first Sunday of each month we celebrate the Sacrament of Communion. Visitors are welcome to receive Communion, as the United Methodist Church has an “open table”: you are not required to belong to this congregation or denomination to receive communion, but simply desire to draw near to God in faith.  We also respect those who choose not to receive communion, or to communion spiritually without receiving the physical elements of bread and juice.

We celebrate communion with grape juice, the “unfermented fruit of the vine”.  We also have gluten-free wafers available (just ask the server when you come forward).

Unless special instructions are given, Communion is served at the front of the sanctuary. If you wish to receive, come forward as the ushers direct you.  (If coming forward would be physically difficult, let an usher know you would like to be served where you are seated, and the servers will bring the bread and juice to you.)

The person who serves you the bread will say “The body of Christ broken for you.”  You may respond by saying “Thanks be to God” or “Amen.” After you receive the bread, move to the communion rail. There will be individual cups of grape juice in the rail. After you drink the juice, place the cup back in rail. You may remain in prayer, kneeling or standing at the rail, for as long as you desire. One of the pastors will be standing to the left of the communion area if you wish to be anointed with oil for blessing or healing.
