Connecting Families through Ministries

Broadway hosts two opportunities for families alongside each other.

Vacation Bible School
Saturday, July 11
9 AM - 3 PM.

Kids meet us downstairs at the Hero Hotline Headquarters where everyone’s gift is valued and every hero has a role to play. You are invited to bring bar soap for a special collection for Philip’s Cupboard - a pantry that provides non-food items for cleaning and hygiene.

Parent to Parent Under God
Saturday, July 11, 2026
10-11:30 Parent to Parent (Coffee and refreshments served at 9 AM)
Main Floor DeLong Lounge

Parents are welcome to bring their kids for VBS and then join other parents in the DeLong Lounge for coffee and refreshments at 9 AM.  At 10:00 you are invited to stay for Parent to Parent Under God. This group meets regularly to build community with other parents and discuss and share the issues faced by today’s parents.

In-SPIRE-d by Broadway

In-SPIRE-d by Broadway

- Thursday, July 2, 2026

Spires have a long and significant history, as from Medieval times to the present, architects continue creating and installing them to add height, flair and\or recognition of the space below them. Broadway's location and long term role in the downtown broadcast its availability and welcoming role in helping neighbors, whether local or not.

[Read more about Spires]

For 50 years or so of moving a dozen times and 100s of short term assignments in all 48 states I would visit a variety of churches with people I worked with.  All were devout believers who preached "thou shalt" and "thou shalt not" with dedication to the Bible's word as they interpreted them. My personal relationship with my higher power was never a good fit.

I discovered Broadway’s Hispanic services and was thrilled. While I did not speak Spanish, I loved to visit their services for Christmas and Easter held in this sanctuary - and was sad when they moved on to their own church (for me, not for them)

Intending to move back to my eastern mountains after I had trekked the backroads of the Midwest and West, I discovered God had other plans for me when he sent me someone to change my focus entirely and my life changed course. Enter Malachi Koontz and all the others that followed.

Many of you see James greeting you every Sunday, know Shelley from Wednesday nights, Tyson dancing on Sundays and Joe enjoying the children's moments and candle lighting.  Each arrived in my life in a variety of ways, all to enrich my days and my soul as well as many of yours as well.

This chapter of my life is because I walked into this church on a Sunday on Malachi's arm. The welcoming people, the acceptance of each of us for who we are and the spiritual feeding of my soul has never been matched anywhere else

I'm writing this blog to recognize each and every one of you for your heart, your support and your unconditional love extended to every person who enters these doors.  I am home!

Book Club Begins New Title

Rooted by Lyanda Lynn Haupt - Tuesday, July 21, 2026

This July and August the Book Club at Broadway UMC will be reading and discussing the book "Rooted" by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. According to Erica Bauermeister, auther of The Scent Keeper, "Rooted is luminous and living proof of its own central premis: that all things are connected, and that activism and creativity can be a powerful combination."

The Book Club at Broadway UMC is for anyone who enjoys sharing their joy of reading, especially around the topics of creation and care for the natural world. We invite you to join us. July reading is up to page 111 and we will finish the book in August. Coffee and light refreshment are available.

A Note From Teresa

As many of you know, I will reach full retirement age this year. That means I am now eligible to apply for Social Security. My application is currently sitting in someone’s inbox in Kansas City. With that, starting yesterday (July 1) my position at Broadway has shifted to part time as I am now partially retired.

At present, my schedule will be the only change. We have developed a great team of volunteers during the week who allow my attention to remain on my ministry work. I am still here to do communications and will be shifting the tech portion gradually to other leaders. Look for me in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9 AM - 4 PM. I will be taking Mondays off until the Sunday tech is transitioned to others.  Then I will add a half day on Mondays from home to my schedule in place of Sunday mornings. You will still see me at worship, but maybe not all morning.

To fill some of the worship gaps, we are looking for anyone willing to share their gifts and time with us upstairs on Sunday mornings. We can show you what we do and schedule more in-depth training if you are interested. Our hope and prayer is that enough will step up so you can find joy in serving without feeling overwhelmed and burdened. Feel free to reach out to me, Pastor Brian, Robert, or Amanda with questions or to express interest.

I look forward to spending more time in ministry with you before entering full retirement. Even then, I will not be far from you. I plan to continue the book club and working with Mike and the rest of the garden team as long as I am able.

Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask me any questions you may have. See you Sunday.

Peace,
Teresa
