This morning I worked a while at the community gardens. The plan was to weed before the beds got watered. When we got to the bed where snow peas were planted, it was obvious someone needed to be picking peas – like today!!
There were several hands helping with this harvest. We ended up with over 5 pounds of fresh snow peas. They were bagged in 8 oz packages and were ready for Care & Share.
I called my friend Sandy M (who works at Care & Share) and asked if she was working tonight. No, she was not. But, if I brought the peas to her house, she would drop them off early at C & S so they would be ready for the clients tonight. She called her friend Carol T to let her know the peas would be in the refrigerator. These workers at C & S are so appreciative and willing to help us out!
When I got home, I got thinking about what it took to get these peas ready for some folks to enjoy - from tilling, to planting, to watering, weeding & picking. But what makes it all worthwhile is the fact some family will have some fresh produce that wouldn’t normally be available to them.
I told Sandy, we just want these to get used while they are still fresh. She laughed and said, “they will be gone in minutes! Do you know all those radishes (from a previous drop off) were gone in under 10 minutes?”
This is community, and this is why we do it!!
