During my first three months at Broadway we had an A/C unit go out and a roof leak that needed to be fixed. In both cases we had to go to the congregation to ask for special donations for the repair and, while I was amazed by the generosity of the congregation, I was also struck by the sense that everyone was waiting for the other shoe to drop. When would the next $15,000-30,000 repair come up? How long could we keep responding to these unexpected emergencies?

I made a commitment to you all that year that we would get an assessment of all of the things that needed to happen here at Broadway in order to get the building back into shape. We knew once we had a comprehensive list that it would be daunting, but at least we would know what to expect. The next time a large repair was necessary, it might not be any easier to stomach the cost, but at least we would be able to cross it off our list and know we were working toward a finite goal of long-term sustainability for the future of God’s work in Council Bluffs!

It took a year to get all of the assessments completed, but we have our list and we are ready to share it with the community!

And…

During that year, we have been dreaming. Not simply remembering how things used to be when Broadway was in peak condition, but visioning what God is calling us to do here in our unique setting in the years to come. How we might reengage with our community, serve the most vulnerable among us, and provide extravagant hospitality to all seeking life abundant in our midst!

The building preservation team has been working hard to come up with a proposal that seeks to jump start some of our needed repairs while incorporating some changes to help us better serve God’s mission for us moving forward, and it’s time to bring everyone into that conversation!

Please find a time to join us at one of these community conversations on repairing and reimagining our space here at Broadway, as together we seek to honor those who have come before us AND serve those who are not here yet!
