Planting Update
On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, members of Broadway’s Community Garden team met at the garden site and planted out the remaining beds with peppers, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers. Flowers were planted to add beauty and attract pollinators. Herbs are planted to deter pests and add an extra layer of flavor to the tasty dishes from the produce. Other vegetables already planted are carrots, radishes, and peas.
First Harvest
The team is excited to announce that in addition to planting, they harvested their first crop. Six dozen and 9 radishes were pulled, topped, cleaned, and delivered to Care and Share where they were offered to clients who visit the pantry.
Garden Blessing
Now that the first planting is finished we invite you to the gardens on Sunday, May 10th for a brief blessing. Pastor Brian will offer a few words about the garden and a blessing to the work and the harvest. Afterward, you are welcome to take a look around and ask any questions you have about the gardens. If you would like to help with any part of the planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, cleaning, and delivery, let Mike know your interests.
Space for Community
We also invite your small group or ministry to host their meetings in the gardens. Just let us know when you plan to be there.
Hot summer mornings may not be the best time because of lack of shade. Invite your group members to bring camp chairs for seating and umbrellas for shade.
Purpose of Community Gardening
The community gardens represent a dedicated effort by Broadway United Methodist Church to nourish both the body and spirit of the surrounding Council Bluffs neighborhood. We offer space for the community to experience where food comes from and we believe that we become more grounded in God's presence when we are in touch with creation.
