Nancy File, Scholarship Committee Chair

On Sunday, May 17, 2026 Broadway United Methodist recognized those graduating this spring. Members of the class of 2026 were given a cord and a blessing for their transition to what is ahead. The following Broadway UMC members were recognized:  Kowen Dighton, Keegan Coffey, Garrett Robertus, William Swanson, Emma Samaniego, Eric Erickson, and Cooper Williams.

Pastor Brian gave this blessing from the people of Broadway as cords were presented: "Remember, wherever you go, God goes with you and that you always have a home here at Broadway."

As always, it is a pleasure to award scholarships on behalf of our congregation and the Higher Education & Scholarship Team.  Broadway UMC has given scholarships for 61 years.  In the early years (1960’s), only one scholarship was given each year to a high school senior.  Over the years Broadway has been fortunate to have many families & individuals donate to our scholarship fund and none of these scholarships today would be possible without their support.

We award these scholarships in memory of Dean & Mona Daniels, Kris Lippke, Donald and Evelyn McMullen, Beth Petersen, Maynard and Emma Ridlen, Bill & Doris Samuelson, Doris Toland, & Douglas Vergamini and, the family of Mick Freeman.  Also, Thomas & Donna Walker who set up our grant fund.

Our high school senior receiving a scholarship is Cooper Williams.   He will be attending the University of Iowa this fall.  He plans to have a double major in Accounting and Finance, with a minor in Mathematics.

This fall, Jacelynn Dunn will be starting her 2nd year at Creighton University, where she is enrolled in the nursing program.

Carter Kunze just completed his first year at Grand View University in Des Moines.  Carter is majoring in Business Management and plays football.

Leah Johnson will be starting her third at the University of Iowa.  Her major is Public Health, and is on the pre-dental track.

Broadway had 5 current scholarship recipients that we have supported the past 3-4 years graduate from college this spring.

Lastly, we will be contributing to the St. Paul School of Theology scholarship fund, as required by criteria of the Dorothy Mae Boone and Harold & Everall Pengra Seminary Scholarships.

Congratulations to all of these college students and we wish them the very best as they continue their education.
