Longfellow Elementary Partnership

The people of Broadway have been busy this July and August collecting school supplies for the teachers at Longfellow Elementary School. Thanks to our ongoing partnership with the school, teachers will have the supplies they need to ensure all students have access to the items necessary to learn and grow.

This year, the church collected:

  • 16 black Expo™ dry erase markers
  • 52 wide-ruled composition notebooks
  • 50 boxes of Crayola™ crayons
  • 20 boxes of Crayola™ markers
  • 17 boxes of facial tissues
  • 1 headphone

On Sunday, August 24, 2025, Pastor Brian dedicated our gifts at worship. School supplies were laid out on the communion rail, and as the congregation raised their arms toward them, he gave this blessing:

God, we give you thanks for the generosity of this community and for the opportunities that we provide and that this community provides for all children to have a safe place to learn, to grow, to experience the kind of growth that comes from adults that care enough to teach and peers that are there to grow together.

We ask that you bless these items of learning, of creativity, of growth, so that the hands that receive them might be inspired to continue to go further, that they might not feel any limitations in their ability, and together we might become the community that you are calling us to.

In your holy, healing name we pray.

Amen.

Our Connection with UMCOR and Midwest Missions

The work of providing the tools for learning will continue through Broadway’s United Women in Faith chapter. Through September, supplies will continue to be collected so we can send completed kits. In early November, the kits will be delivered to the Iowa Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church's annual Ingathering. From there, UMCOR, through the work of Midwest Mission in Jefferson, Iowa, will distribute supplies within the U.S. and around the world so all children have the tools they need to succeed in school.

Watch for the list of needed items, or you can continue to shop the UMCOR list:

  • 1 subject spiral notebooks (8 x 10½”)
  • 12” long ruler with metric and customary measurements
  • Unsharpened pencils
  • Pencil sharpeners
  • 2” or larger erasers
  • 12 count box of colored pencils
  • 24 count box of crayons
  • Rounded student scissors

With Gratitude

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this quarter's mission focus. A special note of gratitude to Julie for counting and sorting the items, and a big thank you to United Women in Faith and Broadway’s Mission Team. You show us how to work together to extend our service beyond our doors. Your generosity will make a real difference in the lives of students and their teachers.
