Remembering Who We Are and Whose We Are

Remembering Who We Are and Whose We Are

- Thursday, November 6, 2025

Did you know that John Wesley spoke out against the exploitation of the poor, the abuse of animals, and the slave trade?  Did you also know that early followers continued this tradition by opposing slavery, smuggling, and poor prison conditions? What about the fact that the church formally addressed social issues by adopting its first Social Creed, which advocated for fair wages, an end to child labor, and safe working conditions? Today United Methodists continue to work, march and pray for racial justice, environmental care, and fair treatment for ALL.

Last Sunday was All Saint's, a day to remember and honor all Christians, both living and deceased, with a specific focus on members of the local congregation who have passed away during the year. Celebrated on the first Sunday in November, it's a time for both grief and hope, as churches reflect on the past and celebrate the "communion of saints"—a legacy of faith from those who came before.

During his sermon, Pastor Brian reminded us of the legacy left to us by all those who came before, telling us that, "the United Methodist Church has always been engaged in our communities through works that create pathways for justice."

  • United Women in Faith was created from the movement to gain women's voting rights.
  • United Methodists founded hundreds of universities. You have probably heard of Southern Methodist University (SMU) or Emerson. However, both of my daughters received their undergraduate degrees from lesser well known Nebraska Wesleyan University.
  • In 1988 Africa University was founded and supported by United Methodist apportionments. AU became the 1st university in Africa to enroll women.
  • The Methodist Hospital system was founded to provide health care where access was limited.

Sunday's worship celebrated the Broadway members who passed away since last year's All Saint's Sunday.  We remembered these people by reading their names, ringing a bell, and lighting a candle.

  • Janis Schutt

  • John Herren
  • Sandy Colvin
  • Joan Scott

As we remember those who we miss and love, how are we called to carry that memory into the future?  "Just as those before us lived in difficult times, we are reminded that God will not abandon us now." Through the example of their faith, "we can stand on the shoulders of those who weren't afraid to work for the Kingdom of God. As we honor our Saints, we know that today it's ok for us to imagine God sized ideas to serve our community." (Pastor Brian)

We remember...Amen

Peace, Teresa

How Broadway Is Addressing the Needs of Our Neighbors

This fall has been a busy time for the people of Broadway.  The church is really stepping up to help as our neighbors face some difficult times.

Longfellow Partnership

Teacher Treats for Conferences

We have already reported our successful school supply collection for the students at our partner school, Longfellow Elementary.  Since then BUMC treated the staff at Longfellow to a cup of hot cider as they headed into October's parent/teacher conferences!

Soctober Success

Broadway's Sock Collection was a real sock-sess. We will be delivering 226 pairs of socks to kids in our community through Longfellow and other elementary schools and Care and Share. Because of the people of Broadway kids can enjoy their recess time with warm feet.

Ingathering for the United Methodist Committee on Relief

On November 1st, United Women in Faith delivered 60 school kits to Midwest Mission for distribution to student throughout the world by The United Methodist Committee on Relief.

Moving Forward in Faith

Conversations are happening in the church around ways we can help our neighbors as we see layoffs and SNAP and other benefit funding paused as a result of the government shut down.  AS will continue partnering with other non-profits like Philip's Cupboard, Care and Share, and Interfaith Response we understand that resources from our partners are not always available.  The need is growing. I am hearing that there are waiting lists at Project Response for those seeking rent and utility assistance. Pantries are not always open when those who need help can visit. Even as help is available, there are often barriers that make it difficult to attain assistance.

So, Broadway people gathered after worship last Sunday to brainstorm ways we can increase our outreach through stronger and expanded partnerships along with added efforts of our own.  You all are so generous with your time and your gifts as we prepare and plan for what may be next.

We have been gifted a few shelf stable food items and are packaging them into groceries for others.  However, what we have is what we can give.  At this time we are not planning to open a pantry, but for someone who finds their way here, we will offer what we can.

Ways you can help...

  • Continue your support of local food pantries through cash or shelf stable food donations. Places like Philip's Cupboard and Care and Share will be the first places we refer people to.
  • If you know of a resource for people that the church staff is unaware of, please make sure to share that with us.
  • Remember we are collecting new or gently used coats, gloves (not mittens), and hats during November for Longfellow Elementary students.  Bring your donations to the church and hang the gloves and hats on the tree.  Coats can be left with the office.
  • Contribute to the church's Pastors Fund. Your donations help us meet people where they are to help as we can.
  • Donate shelf stable foods for our grocery bags. Consider non-expired items that create easy meals.  Canned items should have pop-top lids. Wouldn't it be lovely to also offer some small treats that can lighten someone's day?
  • Join the conversation.  Speak with Pastor Brian if you would like to work with the team.
  • Talk with Ms. Carey or Shane about helping prepare and clean up our Wednesday evening Community Meal.
  • Consider sponsoring a Wednesday night meal and pay for ingredients or provide sandwiches or pizza from a local restaurant. Again, arrange this with Carey or Shane.
  • And, don't forget the power of our prayers. Include our neighbors, our country, and our leaders in your daily time with God.

We will keep you informed as we develop outreach that makes a difference.

Peace,
Teresa

Dedication of New Memorial Tree Leaves

Dedication of New Memorial Tree Leaves

November 2 2025

Last year, as a church, we added this Memorial Tree as a way of being able to remember some of those that had gone before us. We dedicated the first leaves on All Saints Sunday last year. Today on the second annual dedication of new leaves, we're going to take a moment as I read the names that we've added since last year and then I'll invite you all to raise a hand as we offer a blessing over this this new these new leaves.

[2025 Tree Memorials]

Will you join me by just raising a hand toward the memorial tree as we offer these words of dedication?

God, we give you thanks for all those who have come before us, who have shaped our path and provided an opportunity for us to continue to move forward in your work in this world. We ask that you help keep these folks whose names we just read. Hold us all in your loving arms in your holy healing name we pray. Amen

Broadway extends thanks to our chapter of The United Women in Faith who are the stewards of the tree. They make sure everyone is contacted and the leaves are engraved and placed.
